“What is the purpose of life? “

Now that is a question that has been asked over and over again through the eons of time.  It may be a question you have asked of yourself on a number of occasions.

I am not what has happened to me

The purpose of life is to become the person we can admire.

Few may admire you for your physical possessions but the difference you make to the lives of others, your consistent behaviour towards people, your achievements and your legacy will be noticed, admired and remembered.

Many allow the things that have happened to them in their life to define who they are. Sadly for some, their life is about getting to the end of the day and then to do that all over again.   We are not the product of what happens to us.  Exercise your free will.

Create yourself.  Create the person you can admire.

Stephen Covey, in his classic book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, says “Begin with the end in mind”.  He describes the scenario of you walking down a country lane listening to the church bells ringing.  You round a corner in the road and you see a beautiful country church.  There are people going inside.  You feel drawn to follow them.  The church is packed, standing room only.  You realise you are at a funeral and someone is giving a reading at the front of the church, a eulogy.  Then you realise the reader is talking about you.  It is your funeral.

What would you want people to say about you at your funeral?

Begin with the end in mind.

The qualities in other people that we admire are the qualities that we have in ourselves that we don’t recognise.

Create the person you can admire.  What are the values and behaviours you will live by that you can be proud of and admire? What are the achievements that you can admire? Our time on this planet passes all too quick so don’t be shy.  Playing it safe and half heartedly is not the path to fulfilment. Be bold, be courageous.  In the words of Helen Keller “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all”.

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all

Action: Look to the people you admire.  What is it about them that you admire?  What can you admire about yourself? Write a description of yourself, the person you can admire.  What are the milestones that   would demonstrate to you that you are living up to the person you are becoming. Make daily choices that result in you admiring who you are.
